Buckley Bridge Closure: What It Means for Our Community

If you’ve driven between Buckley and Enumclaw lately, you’ve probably noticed something’s missing — the White River Bridge on SR-410. On August 18, 2025, a semi-truck collided with the bridge, causing serious structural damage. Since then, the bridge has been completely closed in both directions. No cars, no bikes, no pedestrians.

For anyone who depends on that crossing, it’s been a huge change. Whether you’re commuting to work, dropping kids at school, or just heading over to grab dinner, the closure has added unexpected time and stress to our daily routines.

What’s Being Done About It?

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) stepped in right away to inspect the damage. They’ve put together a temporary repair plan that involves building and installing five custom-made braces — think of them like a cast or splint for the bridge. Once in place, these braces should allow the bridge to reopen to one lane of alternating traffic, controlled by signals.

WSDOT is aiming to have this setup ready by mid- to late September 2025. It won’t be perfect, but it’ll be a huge improvement compared to the full closure we have now. Permanent repairs are still in the design phase and will come later.

Governor Bob Ferguson even issued an emergency proclamation to help speed up the process and make it easier for the state to get federal funding. That means more resources dedicated to getting this bridge fixed safely and quickly.

Detours: How to Get Around Until Then

  • SR 164 → SR 18 → SR 167 → SR 410
This adds anywhere from 45–60 minutes to a normal trip. Not ideal, but it’s the most reliable option for cars and trucks.

Other things to know:

  • Local roads: Some drivers have been exploring smaller back roads. These can work for locals, but they’re not built for heavy traffic and can get congested quickly.
  • Foothills Trail Bridge: This pedestrian and bicycle bridge is open, and King County even added temporary lighting for nighttime use. It’s a great option if you’re on foot or biking. Just remember — no motor vehicles allowed, including motorcycles or ATVs. Emergency vehicles are the only exception. Electric scooters, bikes, and skateboards can cross as long as you walk them over and not ride them.
  • Public transit: While options are limited, check King County Metro and Pierce Transit to see if their routes can help you out.

What This Means for Us Locally

This closure has been tough — for families, commuters, and local businesses alike. The White River Bridge is more than just concrete and steel; it’s a daily connection that ties Buckley and Enumclaw together.

Here are a few tips while we wait for repairs:

  • Plan extra travel time: Especially during mornings and evenings.
  • Support local: With extra travel headaches, this is a good time to support the shops and restaurants closest to home.
  • Stay updated: Follow WSDOT alerts, the City of Enumclaw’s Facebook page, and King County updates for the latest on repair progress.

Looking Ahead

While it may feel like a long wait, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. By the end of September, if all goes as planned, we should see the bridge reopen — at least partially. Until then, patience, planning, and a little extra neighborly kindness will go a long way.
