As summer winds down here in the Plateau, many of us are looking for those last outdoor adventures before the cooler weather sets in. One of the best local spots to enjoy nature, stretch your legs, and take in some fresh air is right in our backyard: Flaming Geyser State Park along the Green River.
A Unique Park With a Quirky Name
Flaming Geyser State Park gets its name from a natural methane seep that, for decades, created a flame right out of the ground. While the “flaming” part has long since thinned out, the park itself has become a favorite spot for picnics, river walks, and easy day hikes. Spread across nearly 500 acres, it offers a mix of river access, wide-open lawns, and miles of forested trails. If you happen to be lucky you might still see a very short flame!

Walking the Trails & Enjoying the Green River
One of the highlights of the park is the Green River, which winds its way through the property. On warm days, you’ll often see tubers and kayakers floating downstream, while others enjoy wading along the riverbanks.
For those who prefer to stay on dry land, the park has several trails ranging from easy to moderate. A stroll along the Green River Gorge Trail gives you glimpses of the river below, while shorter loops closer to the main picnic area are perfect for families or anyone just looking for a relaxing walk.

Family-Friendly Activities
Picnics & Play: There are plenty of open grassy spaces for picnics, Frisbee, or just relaxing under the trees.
Wildlife Watching: Keep your eyes out for eagles, osprey, and salmon depending on the season.
Model Airplanes: The park even has a field set aside for remote-control aircraft — a unique feature you won’t find in many state parks.
Why Visit Now?
As we transition out of summer, Flaming Geyser is a perfect place to take in the last warm afternoons. The crowds thin out a bit compared to July and August, and the early hints of fall color start to appear along the riverbanks. Trails have nice shade from the trees and a cool breeze along the river! It’s an easy drive from Enumclaw or Auburn, making it a quick local getaway without needing to plan an all-day trip.
A Community Favorite
Flaming Geyser is one of those places that feels both peaceful and lively — a park where you can find solitude on a trail, or share a sunny picnic with friends and family. It’s another reminder of how lucky we are here in Enumclaw and Buckley to have so many outdoor destinations just a short drive away.
